Detroit's STEM with G.R.O.W

The students at the Detroit Center for Success had the amazing opportunity to participate in a STEM activity with G.R.O.W Tutoring!  “G.R.O.W., Generate Real Opportunities and Wonder, is based on the human spirit's infinite capacity to dream, learn, and grow. All children deserve to experience the adventure of discovering the best within themselves, and G.R.O.W. strives to help them achieve that.

G.R.O.W. is committed to helping students realize ‘the more you know, the more you grow’ to achieve their full potential through initiatives, projects, and activities that promote literacy and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).”

Mentors from GROW Tutoring signed onto Zoom to work with our student to lead them through an activity of building a boat out of tinfoil.  During this activity the students were sea explorers that needed to build a prototype of a boat that was sturdy and could stay afloat with the explorer’s coins!  Students used tin foil to craft their prototype then put the boat in a bowl of water.  After they added pennies to it to see how many pennies the boat could hold before it sank.  They learned about buoyancy through this hands-on activity!

Once everyone was done, the students had the opportunity to share their boat with the group and tell everyone how many pennies they could add to their boat before it sank!  The students had a blast being sea explorers for the day!
