The Power of Summer Programming at Center For Success Network

By: Alexis Orchard, Events Associate Intern

Summer at the Center for Success Network is more than just a break from the traditional school year — it’s a vibrant, joyful, and deeply meaningful experience for students and mentors alike. Being part of the summer programming here has shown me just how vital this time is for growth, connection, and happiness.

From the moment students walk through the doors, there’s an overflow of excitement. The days are packed with hands-on learning, laughter, games, and reading. What’s most rewarding is seeing how students begin to open up, take risks, and build friendships.

The happiness is contagious. There’s something so pure about the joy that fills the room when a student finishes a book they didn’t think they could read, or when they make a new friend over a shared project. That joy spreads — to staff, to volunteers, to everyone involved. It’s impossible not to feel uplifted when you’re surrounded by children who are smiling, laughing, and thriving.

But what truly makes this experience unforgettable are the bonds formed during these few short weeks. These are genuine, powerful connections that grow stronger each day. There’s a trust that builds between mentors and students, and a deep sense of care that forms naturally when you're working side by side, encouraging each other, and sharing successes. These are the kinds of relationships that stay with you long after the summer ends.

For me, the students I’ve met through summer programming have left a lasting imprint on my heart. Their stories, their resilience, and their light remind me why this work matters so much. It’s not just about learning loss prevention or academic support — it’s about making kids feel seen, supported, and capable. It’s about creating a summer they’ll never forget — and in doing so, creating memories I’ll carry with me for a very long time.

At Center for Success Network, summer is more than a season. It’s a spark. And I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of it.

Summer of Success is made possible with grant funding from United Way for Southeastern Michigan.
